There is a lot of information and advice available to you when it comes to health supplements; such as vitamins and minerals. However, the most important thing for you to remember is that not all supplements are created equal.
One major problem when going to the supplement store is simply looking at the price tag. Cheaper is unlikely to be better.
The companies that produce vitamins and mineral supplements you get at the store are businesses. A businesses goal is to make a profit, right? So these companies are looking to cut costs, thereby increasing their profit.
How does this relate to you going to the store for supplements? Well, when you purchase a supplement you are not purchasing pure Calcium, for example. Your calcium supplement will also contain binders and fillers. Binders and fillers are used to prevent substances from caking together, they fill space, and they bind some substances together. These binders and fillers do of course serve a purpose, but only in the correct amounts. Many companies will add too much of these extra ingredients in order to make the product at a cheaper price. Cutting corners to save a little may be a successful strategy when it comes to business; but not when it comes to your health.
Another common mistake is that people will rely too heavily on the quantity of a certain vitamin or mineral on the label. For example, you see two vitamin supplements; the first contains 500mg (milligrams) of Vitamin C while the second has only 250mg of Vitamin C. You may assume that the first is going to be better for you, but does your body actually need the extra 250mg? If you feel that you do need the extra vitamin intake, you still need to look and see what other ingredients are in the supplement. An excess of binders and fillers may actually make it more difficult for your body to absorb the vitamin, making the extra amount unnecessary. As a general rule, choose brands that have fewer fillers.
Choose good brands; this may be more expensive, but you will often have to use less of them to get the same effect. And remember that you can’t put a price on your health. If you are unsure what you should get or what you should be looking for then ask the staff. If they don’t seem to be knowledgeable, then you should go to another supplement store. Your body will thank you for choosing good brands, and good products, so take your time and make the right choice.
